At Northwest Children’s Dentistry in Tucson, sedation dentistry allows patients to get the dental treatment they need without feeling uncomfortable or anxious. Sedation dentistry refers to the use of relaxation techniques to accomplish more comfortable treatment. In our office, Dr. Bunch and Dr. Marshall offer different types of sedation including nitrous oxide, to induce a state of calmness, and IV sedation, which puts the patient to sleep.
Sedation may be recommended for patients with:
- Dental phobia or anxiety
- Low pain tolerance
- Trouble holding still
- A need for major treatments
- Special needs
Sedation dentistry is safe and endorsed by the American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. If needed, it is an effective way to make patients feel more comfortable and calm during treatment. Nitrous oxide, also called laughing gas, is a mild sedative commonly used during dental visits. IV sedation, also called a sleep visit, involves putting the patient to sleep so they are unconscious during their treatment.
We understand the concept of IV sedation may be alarming to some parents. We make patients and parents feel more comfortable about the process by taking time to listen to concerns and thoroughly explaining why sedation is recommended as well as what will happen during the treatment. You will also be provided with forms and handouts on what was discussed and given information on the dental anesthetist. During your child’s sedation treatment, you’re always welcome to be with them as they drift off to sleep and peacefully wake up.
At Northwest Children’s Dentistry, our dentists and team make great efforts to help the patient and the parent feel as comfortable as possible during every visit. If you have questions or concerns about sedation dentistry at our Tucson office, we encourage you to contact us. Dr. Bunch and Dr. Marshall are always more than happy to help!
