What to Do if Your Child Loses a Permanent Tooth

Despite our best efforts as parents, teachers, coaches, and caregivers, dental emergencies happen.  This blog will help you prepare in the event a child loses a permanent tooth while under your supervision.  As your pediatric dentist in Tucson, we care about your children's dental health and want to give you the best odds for putting the tooth back in place.

In the event that your child avulses (or knocks out) a permanent tooth, please contact your child's pediatric dentist immediately.  The tooth will have a better prognosis if it is put back into place immediately.  Your dentist and staff may be able to guide you through this process.  If you are unable to put the tooth back in place, your school may have a special solution for the tooth during transport to the dental office.  If you are at home, milk will also work.  Do no try to clean a dirty tooth yourself.  That can damage the tooth further.

The best treatment is always for the injury not to occur. Please remind your children to wear their safety gear such as helmets and sports guards.
