The Words of Pediatric Dentistry

To paraphase Shakespeare, a rose called any other name would still smell as sweet, right?  While that may be true, the words we use to talk to children can have a huge impact on their perceptions.  That's why here at Northwest Children's Dentistry, we try to talk to children in a way that creates a positive mental image of going to the dentist.

One way we accomplish this is avoiding scary words.  For example, instead of saying “shot," we may say "sleepy juice."  Instead of "cavity," we may say "sick tooth."   This not only makes what's happening more relevant to children, it also helps them from associating the dentist with pain, reducing anxiety.  By letting children know what to expect, they can feel calm throughout their appointment and develop a positive association with dental visits.

As your pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to help you understand all aspects of your child's dental care.  Feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.
