What's a Cavity?

Parents are always on the lookout for cavities, but what exactly are they?  This posts gives a more in-depth look on this common childhood ailment.

Cavities are tiny holes or openings that form permanently on the hard surface area of your teeth.  If left untreated, they can grow larger and penetrate deeper into the tooth, causing toothaches, infections or even tooth loss.  You can treat a cavity with simple fluoride treatments if it's just getting started, but treatment can also include fillings, root canals, crowns or even removal of the tooth.

As far as cavities go, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  By taking proper care of your teeth (i.e. regular brushing, flossing, and limiting sugary foods and drinks), you can prevent most cavities from ever forming.
