Cavities Can Form at Any Age

One of your baby's first milestones is having the front teeth come in.  Parents love to watch those small toothy grins.  What many do not realize, though, is that cavities can form as soon as that first tooth emerges.

Here are some tips to keep that baby smile free from cavities:

  • Don't put a child to bed with a bottle of milk.  A sleeping infant or toddler can leave a pool of milk around their teeth as they sleep, increasing cavity risks.  If your child likes to sleep with a bottle, consider filling it with water instead.
  • Limit juices at an early age.  Juices are one of the main causes of cavities in very young children.  If you can't keep it out of their diet, try not to exceed 4-6 oz. per day.
  • Start brushing right away.  Having two set times of day when you brush, even for young ones, can help teeth stay strong.  It also gets kids in the habit of brushing, rather than waiting until they get older and may want to be stubborn about it.
  • Make regular appointments with a pediatric dentist.  We see patients as young as 1 year old.  Our goal is to help you prevent dental illnesses before they start.
