Teeth and the Truth about Juice

August 3rd, 2012

Although summer is almost over, it stays hot here in Tucson for much of the year. Keeping our children hydrated is very important. With so many choices in the marketplace, what should we know as parents?  What are the best beverage options for our kids?

In dentistry, we like to remind parents that juice and other sugary drinks should be consumed in moderation since they can cause tooth decay. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends:

1. No juice for infants younger than 6 months
2. Limit juice to 4 – 6 ounces per day for children 1 to 6 years old
3. Limit juice to 8 – 12 ounces per day for children 7 to 18 years old

What are good alternatives to juice? Water and low-fat milk are the best drink choices. Fresh fruits and vegetables are the best food replacements.

Enjoy the last few days of summer before school starts and stay healthy!
