When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?

January 31st, 2019

As your pediatric dentists in Tucson, we handle many of your child's dental needs.  If your kid needs braces, however, you must see an orthodontist to correct those issues.  When does this occur?

The answer really will depend on your child, but as a general rule, many children can wait until all permanent teeth have come in before beginning orthodontic therapy. This usually occurs at around 10 to 13 years of age.  However, there are some specific cases in which a child could benefit from orthodontic intervention as early as 5 years of age.   We will help you navigate this process by keeping an eye on your child's teeth and providing recommendations based on our experience.

As your child's pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to serve all your child's dental needs.  If you have any questions for our office, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

What's the Difference Between an Orthodontist and a Dentist?

October 22nd, 2015

We get a lot of questions about dentistry, and one question that sometimes crops up is: What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?

A dentist is licensed medical professional that focuses on oral health care.  In the case of Northwest Children's Dentistry, we are pediatric dentists, meaning that we studied extra years to focus specifically on health care issues of infants, toddlers, children, and adolescent teeth.

An orthodontist is a specialized type of dentist that took extra training to focus on the alignment of teeth.  They generally help with issues of misaligned teeth, crowded teeth, underbites, and overbites.

As your child's  pediatric dentist in Tucson, we can tell you if your child needs to see an orthodontist.  If you have any questions, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

When Should Your Child Visit the Orthodontist

April 1st, 2014

As your child grows, so do the placement of their teeth.  Some children will eventually need braces.  While a pediatric dentist can help with most dental health problems, orthodontists specialize in braces and other improper bite issues.

Many parents ask us when their child should visit the orthodontist.  The answer is very specific for your child. As a general rule, many children can wait until all permanent teeth have come in before beginning orthodontic therapy. This usually occurs at around 10 to 13 years of age.  There are some children, however, with specific jaw growth and tooth placement patterns that benefit from orthodontic intervention as early as 5 years of age.

As your pediatric dentist in Tucson, we will evaluate your child’s specific needs and refer you to an orthodontist accordingly.  We want to help you understand all aspects of your child's dental care.  Feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

We receive a lot of questions from parents about when is the right time to visit the orthodontist.  The answer is very specific for your child, so if you are one of our patients, we can discuss this specifically at your next appointment.  As a general rule, many children can wait until all permanent teeth have come in before beginning orthodontic therapy.  This usually occurs at around 10 to 13 years of age.

There are situations in which you may want to take your child to the orthodontist sooner.  Specific jaw growth and tooth placement patterns benefit from orthodontic intervention as early as 5 years of age.
