Choosing the Right Toothpaste for Your Child

July 14th, 2016

There are literally hundreds of toothpaste options out there for your child.  Which one should you choose?

The most important thing you should look for when going toothpaste shopping is the "American Dental Association" logo of approval.  Their logo means the toothpaste has been tested by specialists who understand teeth.  If you use a brand of toothpaste without this recommendation, it could contain harsh abrasives that could hurt teeth.

The amount of toothpaste you use is also important to consider.  For toddlers, use only a slight smear of toothpaste while brushing.  For preschoolers up to early elementary aged kids, use only a pea-sized amount.  These young children often swallow toothpaste on accident, so keeping the toothpaste to this amount will minimize digestion while still giving you the advantages of using toothpaste.
