Summer Tips for Dental Health

June 24th, 2019

Summer is in full swing, and in between all the camps, playing, and outings, it's good to keep your kid's dental health up to par.  Here are some tips on how to keep your child's teeth healthy over the summer:

  • Drink water instead of sugary drinks. Kids will get hot running around, and it may be tempting to let them drink whatever's in the fridge. Stick to water, though, to reduce the chance of cavities. It's best not to let your child drink more than 4-6 oz. of juice a day.
  • Wear mouth guards for contact sports. If your child is going to a summer sports camp for an intensive sport, consider getting them a mouth guard to protect their teeth.
  • Don't throw your dental routine out the window. With a summer schedule or while you're on vacation, it may be tempting to skip brushing and flossing regularly. Make sure to keep this up even if your day is completely different than during the school year.
  • Come in for routine dental check-ins. Summer is often a popular time for us to see kids who are active during the school year. Make sure to schedule an appointment so we can give you personalized advice on your child's dental health.

Summertime and Dental Care

July 17th, 2014

Summer is a busy time for kids and parents.  While you are out there enjoying fun in the sun, here are a few dental tips to keep in mind:

  • Set aside specific times to brush and floss.  Without school, it's easy for a kid to forget simple routine things like dental care.  Make sure you enforce the basics as a part of their summer routine.
  • Consider sports guards.  If your child is heavily involved in summer sports, you may want to give them some extra protection for their teeth.  Mouth guards provide greater protection against oral trauma in high contact sports.
  • Limit juice and other sugary drink intake.  Beat the heat instead with refreshing ice water or non-sweetened ice tea for older kids.

As your pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to help you understand all aspects of your child's dental care.  Feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

Keeping Teeth Healthy Over the Summer

June 14th, 2013

As summertime approaches, families are thinking of all the fun the season entails.  Few give a second thought to dental health.

However, with the increase in temperature comes an increase in drinking sugary beverages, and that can be damaging to your child's teeth.   One study shows that there has been  an increase in decay rates in children ages 2 to 5.  Besides just drinking juices and soda, kids in this age range also eat more sugary snacking between meals during the summer (ice cream anyone?).

Make sure your little one still maintains good oral health care during the summer.  Limit the amount of juice and other sugary drinks your child consumes, keep between meal snacking to a minimum, and continue to brush and floss regularly, even if you're traveling.

As your pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to help you manage every season of your child's dental health.  Feel free to call us and ask us questions anytime.
