Back to School Nutrition

August 10th, 2016

It's that time of year again when parents are buying back to school supplies and gearing up for another year.  Children consume up to half of their daily caloric intake at school, so knowing what your child eats at school is important.

As children's dentists, we care about your child's dental well being year round.  Whether your kid eats a school-provided lunch or you are preparing lunch at home, here are some tips on what to provide during the academic year:

  • Limit juice intake to 4-6 ounces a day.  Juice consumption can cause cavities in young teeth.  Opt instead for water or milk.
  • Provide 1-2 servings of fruits or vegetables with every meal.  Fresh produce often helps clean children's teeth and often full of nutrients too.
  • Avoid processed food whenever possible.  Processed food tends to contain higher amounts of sugar, which can damage teeth.

As your child's pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to take care of all your children's dental needs.  If you have any questions, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

The Link Between Your Child's Teeth and Nutrition

April 7th, 2016

Every time you visit Northwest Children's Dentistry, your Tucson pediatric dentist, you may have noticed that we ask a lot of questions about your child's diet.  Generally, we will discuss the following topics with you every time you come to the office:

  • What your child eats at meals, drinks, and snacks
  • The frequency each type of food or drink is consumed
  • Recommended changes for improving your child's dental health

Our goal in asking these questions is to pinpoint potential problems that could result in costly and complicated dental treatments in the future.  We believe that prevention is worth an ounce of cure, so we will often advise to limit your child's consumption of sugary foods and drinks.

We understand that all children are unique and may have differing oral health needs. Being able to understand how your child’s teeth and gums are impacted by nutrition reduces their risk for cavities and decay.

As your pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want your kids to eat healthy and maintain strong teeth.  If you have any dental questions, feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522.

Eating Toward Healthier Teeth

August 20th, 2014

We all know that eating healthy makes for a better smile, but what exactly does that mean?  Here's a list of foods and how they help keep your pearly whites looking great:

Crunchy fruits and veggies like apples and carrots are natural scrubbers and help remove plaque from your teeth.

Dairy products like milk and yogurt strengthen all bones, even teeth, due to their high calcium content.

Foods with high vitamin C don't just help during cold season.  They also promote healthy gums.

Leafy greens like spinach and kale have phosphorus, which helps your body absorb calcium.

As your pediatric dentist in Tucson, we want to help you manage all your children's dental needs.  Feel free to call us at (520) 544-8522 if you have any questions.

Nutrition and Your Child's Dental Health

January 2nd, 2014

Here at Northwest Children's Dentistry, we are firm believers that prevention is an important element in your child’s oral health success.  We discuss your child’s nutrition at every appointment because as they grow, what they eat and drink are likely to change.

We often ask about:

  • Their current foods, drinks, and snacks
  • The frequency each is consumed

From there, we can provide you with individualized tips that will help you maintain your child's good dental health.  We understand that all children are unique and may have differing oral health needs. Being able to understand how your child’s teeth and gums are impacted by nutrition reduces their risk for cavities and decay.  It also helps you avoid more costly, complicated dental treatments in the future.
